Environmentally Friendly Dust Abatement Products For Roads And Driveways

By Marcie Goodman

The large amount of dust that can be produced from dirt roads can cause a number of problems. People who live alongside gravel roads or who have driveways of gravel will be aware of these issues. When a road or driveway has been in place for a long time, the gravel becomes crushed from the weight of cars, and this causes more dust. This is especially the case if the weather is dry. Road dust abatement products are therefore often used.

There are a number of reasons why dust should be controlled. It can cause environmental hazards, and when dust is thrown up by vehicles the visibility on the road becomes poor. It is also not healthy for someone to breathe in a lot of dust particles. Wind can cause dust to blow far, and it will settle on people's cars and in people's homes.

The best way to treat gravel surfaces is with an environmentally friendly product, such as Dustlock, Ecobinder, Molex, Earthbind or Enviroseal Dust Control. These are some of the examples of 'green' substances that are used on roads. It will defeat the purpose if a non-green product is used in order to prevent dust from becoming an environmental danger.

Molex and Ecobinder are capable of preventing dust from being blown about because of their safe plant properties. Ecobinder contains lignum, while Molex is made from beet molasses. Both of these plant materials are sticky, like glue, and are therefore good for dampening dust particles. A road's surface is also improved when Ecobinder is used. Neither product is poisonous to humans or animals.

The substances for dust abatement purposes that are made from oils include Dustlock and Enviroseal Dust Control. Both are 'green' substances that are very effective. Enviroseal has a particularly long lifespan, remaining effective for up to a year, and is often used in areas where freezing temperatures are experienced because it will remain unaffected. Vegetable oils and soybean oils are the basis of these substances.

You might be wondering what you can do about the dust problems that your dirt driveway is causing. The commonly used product for home usage is calcium chloride. Calcium chloride is effective for controlling dust, and is know to be safe for the environment too, as it is a common salt. It is wise to always use the product as directed, but in general it is harmless and will also not damage cars that are parked or driven over it.

If you have bought calcium chloride for your driveway, it is helpful to first wet the surface or to wait until rain has fallen. The dampness will help the substance to penetrate. Always read the manufacturer's instructions that indicate the recommended rate of application. Calcium chloride can be in a liquid or powder form.

Calcium Chloride is quite inexpensive to purchase, when compared with oil-based substances, and will still allow surfaces to be graded or maintained. The disadvantage, however, is that it is a corrosive substance. While it won't damage a vehicle that drives over it, mud that is formed during rains can become corrosive. On the market, you may find several types of dust abatement products, all with their own pros and cons.
