Steps Followed In Lead Cleanup Process

By Jerri Perry

Lead has been in the past utilized in paint manufacture. It was applied on houses and was very useful in other construction uses. Studies that were conducted in the past show that paints made using Pb are a health hazard to the life of people and pets. While Pb is inhaled it results to poisoning. Laws were passed that required contractors to take the initiative of lead cleanup.

One of the two important laws which were introduced was environmental protection agency which was planned to prevent infection caused by Pb based paints. This prevention was done through an easy testing process meant to verify if Pb paint was present or not. The other law was repair and painting rule. Through this law the houses which were constructed before year 1978 were required to strictly follow or take secure measures to remove Pb paint.

To be able to get rid of this Pb paint there are various steps to be taken in order to get effective results. The first step is to move all the furnishings, accessories, fittings and furniture which include tables, sofas, carpets, curtains and beds, among others. If moving does not work for you, you can cover or wrap them using large plastic sheets.

The floor has to be covered too and then the corners should be sealed using a tape to hold the cover down. The doors leading to other rooms should be closed to protect them from getting dust. The space under the doors should also be sealed.

From there, make sure anyone who is not involved in this work is sent out. So children and expectant mother ought to far away from the working place. It is important that you wear personal protective equipment before you begin working. Some of the protective gears that you ought to have on include safety goggles, gloves, hair covering, shoe covers, and a cover all. It not advisable to take eating stuff in the working area.

The process starts by first implementing the safety precautions to make sure that the Pb dirt and fumes are not inhaled. Chemical stripper usage is the safest since when it is used Pb dirt and fumes are not produced. Their application on the wall is through a brush then after a while they settle down.

After a while, the paint start forming bubbles since after the chemical stripper application it softens. After softening of the paint then you can you use a brush or knife for paint removal. However, after this removal at times you may see paint traces that have remained on some parts of the wall. To clear the traces an alkaline based stripper can be utilized to clear the layers or traces that remained. In this whole process of paint removal you should always have a bucket beneath you so that the scrapped paint falls inside there.

The final step is to do cleaning of the area been worked on. All the plastic coverings should be removed carefully by grabbing them at the corners and wrapping the sheet up. The chips and dust that fell on the covering should be kept inside when wrapping the sheet. Wash your hands after cleaning, shower then change your clothes. If these steps are followed well lead cleanup will be completely effective and done in a short time.
